Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of builders, site managers and managers of small to medium-sized building businesses who apply knowledge of structural principles, codes, standards and legal requirements to Class 1 and 10, to a maximum of two storeys and Class 2 to 9 Type C constructions, and who plan and supervise safe building and construction work, prepare and administer contracts, and who apply quality principles to building and construction projects.

Building relates to construction and Site Management is about managing the factors around construction, such as the deployment of crews with specialised skills (including builders), product compliance, deployment of contract specialised skills, weather and site location.

The qualification is designed to enable two specialised occupational outcome pathways depending on elective options which will be reflected as:

Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building)

Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of unit CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.

In order to achieve the CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction students must satisfactorily complete
the following units of competency:

CPCCBC4001 Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for Class 1 and 10 Buildings
CPCCBC4002 Manage work health and safety in the building and construction workplace
CPCCBC4007 Plan building and construction work
CPCCBC4008 Supervise site communication and administration processes for building and construction projects
CPCCBC4009 Apply legal requirements to building and construction projects
CPCCBC4010* Apply structural principles to residential and commercial constructions (Pre)
CPCCBC4012 Read and interpret plans and specifications
CPCCBC4014 Prepare simple building sketches and drawings

Entry Requirements:

18 years old and above at the time of enrolment
Year 11 or equivalent
LLND skills demonstration according to “Language, literacy and Numeracy requirements”, and digital skills levels identified
Student must have access to Computer, Internet and Printer or e-printer
Student must be able to enrol, participate and complete the assessments using a computer, Microsoft Office applications, the online learning management system (LMS), and online research tools.
Pre-training review must be completed before enrollment
Additional entry requirements for International students:
Have study rights for the duration of the course
Provide evidence of English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 overall or equivalent
Maintain valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their stay in Australia
Meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirements as per Department of Home Affairs regulations

A mixed delivery model is implemented including face to face training and training in simulated work environment. Training will take place at the Melbourne Education Institute facility at Level 1, 310 King Street, Melbourne VIC Australia 3000 and Workshop: 271-273 Macaulay Road, North Melbourne, VIC
The learner is required to achieve competency in 12 units in order to complete the course.
The learner will undergo:

An introduction process explaining the units of competency and the training and assessment program.
A review of the available units of competency that will be selected.
An induction into the training program
A review and sign off of the training plan

The full-time duration of this course is 44 study weeks plus 8 weeks of holidays (over 52 weeks).
Some of the course is allocated to workbooks, assessments and projects.
The delivery schedule outlines details of weekly study, hours of contact time and assessments to be completed.
Students may work at a variety of individual paces and complete the course in a shorter or longer timeframe. The duration and scheduling will consider the need for students to fully gain and develop the skills and knowledge that the assessment will assess; allowing for variations of some students due to specific learning needs and time for students for reflect on their learning and practice the skills and knowledge in a real or simulated workplace prior to presenting for assessment
