Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of an individual working as a senior civil works designer or a para-
professional designer, who supports professional engineers. They perform tasks that are broad,

specialized, complex and technical and include strategic areas and initiating activities. They are
responsible for the design of complex projects to ensure the implementation of the client’s site
requirements and are required to demonstrate self-directed application of theoretical and technical
knowledge and initiate solutions to technical problems or management requirements.

In order to achieve the RII60520 - Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design students must
satisfactorily complete the following units of competency:

Entry Requirements:

Melbourne Education Institute (MEI) has admission requirements as follows:

Students must be at least 18 years of age at the time of their course commencement at the college.
Students applying for this course will need to provide evidence of satisfactory completion of Australian Year 11 or equivalent or higher.
Either a minimum IELTS test score of 5.5 or equivalent for direct entry into a VET course or IELTS score of 4.5 or equivalent with an ELICOS (20 weeks) or an IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent with an ELICOS (10 weeks) to be taken before the main VET course. ELICOS must be at least at General English Upper Intermediate or English for Academic Purposes Upper-Intermediate level. OR
Evidence that, within two years of their application date, they have successfully completed at least 2 years of qualification in Australia leading to AQF level 6 Advanced Diploma qualification or higher.

Please note: all the students commencing this course are required to complete an LLN test (other than those who have
successfully completed Bachelor or higher qualification in Australia) and a pre-training review (wherever applicable) on
the orientation day to assist MEI to identify student’s skills, experience and knowledge and needs for additional support
during their study with Melbourne Education Institute.

A mixed delivery mode is implemented, including face-to-face training and training in a simulated work environment. Training will take place at the Melbourne Education Institute facility, Level 1, 310 King Street, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia.

The following techniques are employed during face-to-face delivery, depending on the subject matter: trainer presentations and demonstrations, PowerPoint presentations, individual tasks, case studies, research activities, role plays, practical demonstrations, and group work.

During independent study time, students will be provided with textbooks to develop their knowledge and understanding. These resources contain a mixture of theoretical information and practical tasks. The textbooks include sufficient information for students to learn the topic, undertake practice activities, and complete required tasks. Students will also be directed to conduct research activities and access reference materials. Trainers will provide support to students outside of scheduled class time.

Students may be given opportunities for formative assessment during delivery. Trainers will provide feedback on areas for improvement to help students develop the necessary knowledge and skills and prepare them for summative assessment.

This course is delivered over 104 weeks comprising eight (8) terms of 10 weeks each (80 weeks total). Holiday
breaks amounting to 24 weeks (as specified in the timetable) Students are required to participate in 20 hours of class-based training/assessment per week. Classes are normally scheduled for 2.5 days per week. Students will be required to undertake additional independent study/ homework for approximately 5
hours per week. Total course hours: Face to face classes –960 hours. Total course Independent study and assessment outside of class time – 640 hours. Total course hours: 960 + 640 = 1600 hours.
